Villeroy & Boch research reveals why Brits go to the bathroom to relax

Research commissioned by bathroom experts, Villeroy & Boch, has revealed that we are a nation of bathroom lovers. When it comes to taking time out, Brits spend an average of 2 hours a week – or 1 whole working day a month – relaxing in the bathroom, and nearly a quarter (23%) go to their bathroom at least once a day solely to unwind and relax.

The study also discovered that men typically spend longer in the toilet getting away from it all than women, and 18- to 24-year-olds have more 'me-time' compared to any other age range.

The chance to enjoy some peace and quiet tempts 44% of the nation into the most private room in the house, highlighting the importance of creating a relaxing haven.

Fabrizia D’Autilia, spokesperson for Villeroy & Boch, commented: “I’m not surprised that people enjoy spending time in their home bathroom. So much more than a functional space, bathrooms are our sanctuaries. It’s where we can close the door on the rest of the world and indulge in a moment of calm. Whether hiding out or enjoying a pre-planned soak, time in the bathroom to escape and relax can make a huge difference to our wellbeing.

“This can be enhanced by transforming your bathroom into a wellness oasis. Small changes from the colour of the walls to the lighting, can make a big difference in creating a relaxing environment.”

Wanting a break from those you live with was another top reason for spending time in the bathroom, with 13% of the nation going to the bathroom simply to have time away from a partner. Singing in the shower (10%) and time to browse social media (8%) are other reasons why Brits love going to the bathroom to relax.

Overall, the research found that enjoying a soak in the bath is the best way to de-stress for 4 out of 10 (nearly 40%), with 20% saying it's their favourite time of the week.
