How Sheraton Interiors designed a classic but comfortable family kitchen
Shehryar Khan, MD of Twickenham-based kitchen specialist Sheraton Interiors, reveals how he designed stunning space, full of refined details and classic touches, but fully equipped for a modern family.
Q: What type of property was it in and who was the project for?
A: This project was completed within a substantial private family home, designed for clients who love to cook, entertain and host on a regular basis. The property naturally lends itself to a classic yet refined aesthetic, and the kitchen was envisioned as the heart of the home – a space that needed to feel elegant, welcoming and highly functional in equal measure.

Q: What was the brief from the client for this project?
A: The brief was clear: the clients wanted a classic kitchen that felt luxurious but not overly formal. Storage was a key priority, particularly concealed storage, alongside a dedicated pantry and drinks area to keep the main kitchen clutter-free. They also wanted a strong sense of symmetry, practical work zones for everyday family life, and a space that would age beautifully rather than follow short-term trends.

Q: How did you go about meeting the brief?
A: We focused on strong architectural balance, layering classic detailing with modern functionality. The layout was carefully planned to ensure generous circulation space while keeping all working zones intuitive and efficient. We introduced an oversized island as the focal point, combining seating, storage and preparation space, while secondary areas such as the pantry and appliance cabinetry were designed to discreetly support daily use without visually overpowering the room.

Q: What type of cabinetry did you choose?
A: We selected In-frame Shaker cabinetry for this project due to its ability to deliver refined, bespoke detailing alongside exceptional build quality. The classic framed style was ideal for achieving the traditional look the client wanted, while still allowing for fully modern internal solutions. The precision of the cabinetry meant we could incorporate detailed cornicing, bespoke internal finishes and tailored storage without compromise.

Q: What materials did you use? Did you use anything different or unusual?
A: A soft painted finish was chosen for the main cabinetry to enhance the timeless feel of the space, paired with a darker island to ground the design visually. The worktops were kept deliberately understated, allowing the cabinetry and detailing to take centre stage. Internally, we introduced contrasting timber finishes within feature cabinets, the pantry and the drinks station to add warmth and depth, creating moments of interest when doors are opened.

Q: What were the particular challenges that you faced?
A: One of the main challenges was balancing the scale of the kitchen with the need for it to feel calm and cohesive rather than overwhelming. This was addressed through careful proportioning of cabinetry, consistent detailing throughout, and the use of symmetry to create visual order. Integrating large appliances while maintaining a seamless, furniture-like appearance was another key consideration, which we resolved through bespoke housing and thoughtful alignment.

The hidden access door presented a challenge due to its sheer size. It was designed to appear as a double door to match the kitchen furniture, while opening as a single door. To achieve this, a specialist concealed German pivot hinge was specified, capable of supporting up to 100 kg and allowing the door to push open smoothly in both directions.

Q: Are there any design elements that you’re particularly proud of?
A: The concealed drinks and coffee station is a standout feature. When closed, it blends into the cabinetry, but when opened, it reveals a beautifully detailed, practical space that feels both indulgent and purposeful. We’re also particularly proud of the island design, which anchors the room and brings together functionality, craftsmanship and visual impact.

Q: What is the client's favorite part of the finished project?
A: The clients love the pantry and storage solutions most. Having everything organised, accessible and hidden away has transformed how they use the kitchen day-to-day. They also appreciate how the space feels both impressive when entertaining and effortless for everyday family life – exactly what the brief set out to achieve.
