Online home renovation and design platform, Houzz, has revealed its top 10 predictions for trends in 2021, based on its data that it has gathered over the year, including popular searches, most-saved images and information gathered from the platform's professional Houzz Pro community.
Top of the list is the rise of outdoor entertainment spaces, which have seen increased interest after the restrictions that were put in place over the summer. Outdoor dining areas and pizza ovens were particularly popular requests.
The return of the all-white kitchen is another prediction, which is a trend that the site says could be part of a desire to be surrounded by clean-looking spaces. Searches on Houzz for 'white kitchen' rose considerably this year compared to the year before, as did the number of images saved depicting white worktops.
Bathrooms, however, have seen an increase in the colourful treatment. Standing out in that most-saved list were designs featuring pink cabinetry, gold grouting, pastel sanitaryware and rich zellige tiles. 'Pink bathroom', 'navy bathroom' and 'gold bathroom' were new additions to the most popular search terms on the site in the latter half of 2020. Interesting bathroom brassware finishes were also on the rise.
Multifunctional spaces were rising up the agenda as homeowners had to use their homes for more activities, and the term 'smart home' has seen a dramatic increase in popularity this year with voice recognition technology now commonplace, removing the need to touch switches and household appliances.
