From tiles that look exactly like natural stone, through to those that nail the fluted look, or bring intricate geometric shapes to a design, we round up the latest bathroom tile launches to see what's trending now. By Emma Hedges.

The power of the backdrop in an interior should never be underestimated, and what goes on the walls and floors of a bathroom can have a profound effect on the ultimate success of the entire scheme. A look at the latest exciting tile products on the market shows that there are endless possibilities, and that manufacturers are outdoing themselves when it comes to originality and flair.

5 hot summer bathroom tile trends:

1. NATURAL SELECTION
We're hearing a lot about how the post-pandemic consumer is craving the soothing tones and textures of nature, and this has prompted the launch of an array of natural lookalikes in soft and warm neutral tones. These are perfect for allowing bathroom products to take centre stage in a design, as they sit back to enable stronger finishes, colours and silhouettes to catch the eye. Additionally, they are available in increasingly large-scale tile formats, which is a particular advantage in a bathroom design.

Apavisa's Mystone collection comes in soft Grana, Grey and Ivory tones, with five available formats, the largest of which is 120 x 260cm. Pictured here are Grana tiles on the floor and left wall, with Ivory on the back and right walls

Metropol Ceramica's new Arduin collection features the Art Sand wall tile, shown here on the back wall, which has a delicate pattern cut into it. The range's warm, almost pink tones create a relaxing ambience in a spa-like scheme. Available in Sand, Grey, Black and White, Arduin also features plain and volumetric wall tile options, and large-format floor tiles in a choice of 90 x 90cm or 120 x 60cm

2. GREEN AGENDA
An extension of the natural trend is the continuing fascination with bringing the outside in, and green is the perfect vehicle for doing this. While colour drenching has also been a key theme in interiors, the latest tile collections enable designers to saturate a space in a single hue, but introduce subtle variations within that so that it doesn't feel overwhelming.

RUBIK from Harmony is a 12.3x12.3cm porcelain tile collection with a strong emphasis on colour. The distinguishing hallmark of these straight-edged, smooth matt tiles is their shade variation, affording all kinds of design potential and the ability to create an almost 'bitmap' effect

From Harmony, the LOG by ALT DESIGN collection is directly inspired by woodworking techniques and, more particularly, by the construction of mountain cabins, whose walls are assembled by logs – LOG GREEN measures 12.5 x 50cm, and features a curved shape that creates an interplay between light and shadow

3. FINE LINES
The fluted look has been gaining ground for a while and has made its way through various surfaces, now arriving at tiles. While the interplay between light and shadow in fluted tile surfaces can create some stunning visual effects, adding fine vertical lines to a wall is surprisingly powerful when it comes to creating depth in a space.

The new Tivoli-R wall tile from Vives represents the natural elegance of wood that has been worked on until a relief of maximum sophistication is obtained. It is available in the rectified 45x120 cm format and in three versions, Avellana, Canela and a Multicolor version which magnifies the optical effect of depth

Part of the London collection from Vives, the Belgravia white body stone effect wall tile comes in four sizes, with the Chelsea-R fluted tile measuring 45 x 120cm

4. RUSTIC LIFESTYLE
While some trend watchers are citing our experience with the pandemic as the reason we're harking back to the cosy simplicity of times gone by, others might say that the appeal of rustic living has never really gone out of fashion. Either way, manufacturers are responding with a raft of new products that evoke the rustic look with a distressed and well-worn feel.

Peronda's FS STAR collection, designed by the interior and furniture designer Francisco Segarra, is made up of a wide range of colours with its iconic star. Pictured here in Night in a rustic-style scheme, the tiles measure 45 x 45cm

Aparici's Kintsugi collection is a reinterpretation of the Japanese technique. Pictured are the Kintsugi Green Aichi and the patterned Kintsugi Green Basi tiles, both measuring 30 x 30cm

5. COMPARE AND CONTRAST
An advantage of the latest stone-effect products is that they work particularly well as a foil for stronger designs, and many manufacturers are showcasing punchier, decorative tiles featuring striking geometric motifs alongside a more natural-looking partner.

Aparici's decorative Crea Montana Natural tile creates a vintage look paired with the Crea White Natural tile in the same collection, both measuring 30 x 30cm

The new Sunset collection from Ceracasa, shown here in Terracotta and available in a broad selection of sizes, features a handmade 'vintage' aesthetic – the geometric pattern looks particularly striking when combined with a stone-effect tile
