How Drummonds' products evoked classic elegance with a modern twist

This modern extension, which has been tacked onto the side of an elegant period property, proved the perfect backdrop for Drummonds' products in a scheme that succeeds in blending traditional sophistication with a cool, contemporary vibe.

Part of the complete renovation of a 19th-Century timber farmhouse sited within 11 acres of English parkland, this sizeable extension was built with panoramic glass windows, offering views of the nearby lake. Occupying part of the building, the new master bathroom is swathed in strikingly veined Calacatta marble and furnished with statement pieces from Drummonds.

The new owners wanted a traditional English bathroom which incorporated subtle contemporary accents, and which placed marble as a feature material. Having been admirers of Drummonds’ classic designs and high-quality craftmanship for many years, they were the couple’s first choice when it came to bathroomware.

While Calacatta might be perceived as a classic choice of material, the mismatched laying pattern where the tiles are deliberately positioned so the veining doesn't line up creates an abstract look, and offers a distinctly contemporary feel.

The first thing you see when you enter the room, Drummonds’ Tay bath in a hand painted candy pink finish takes centre stage and provides a playful pop of colour. The Tay is a large double-ended bath, made from solid cast iron, with a tasteful rippled plinth.

On either side of the entrance, two Single Buttermere vanities bring a classic touch. Uniting a fine china clay top with prettily tapered metal legs, they have a harmonious simplicity, in keeping with the overall feel of the room.

An unlacquered brass finish features throughout, from the imposing floorstanding shower to the basin and bath mixers and accessories including the custom made-to-order 4-bar towel radiator and large bath rack. The beauty of this finish is that it will age over time, developing a characterful patina which will perfectly reflect the style and heritage of the original building.

The bath features a Bestwood lever floorstanding bath and shower mixer, while the basin boasts a Bestwood lever 3 hole basin mixer. As with all the pieces in the Bestwood collection designed in collaboration with Martin Brudnizki, the basin mixer’s shapes reference traditional hand tools and machinery controls such as water and gas piping, connecting pieces and traditional plumbing ware.

The shower area features a Grand Shower floorstanding riser pipe and shower arm representing Drummonds' modern take on a classic and traditional shower system. The pipe has been designed to go with the brand's full range of shower sets. This stunning full length shower pipe that extends from floor to ceiling, complete with elegant shower rose, is a unique item and would be the centrepiece in any bathroom.

The finished project is a characterful space brimming with classic elements, but with an overarchingly playful and modern feel.
