Project focus – 7 times Schlüter-Systems helped out behind the scenes

Some bathroom products take centre stage, but others are instrumental in helping designers achieve a polished and reliable finish – we look at 7 projects when Schlüter-Systems solutions helped create a seamless final result.

1. When The Newt country estate in Somerset undertook a major renovation and restoration of its hotel and spa areas, it turned to tile and stone experts Schlüter-Systems to help with the project. DITRA-HEAT underfloor heating solution was used throughout, while KERDI-BOARD helped construct multiple focal points in the spa area behind the tiling. The durability of the tile backerboard allowed for 20mm Carrara Marble to be easily fixed over for a beautiful and luxurious finish.

2. Originally completed in 1906, the Grade II listed Old War Office building in London has been transformed into The OWO – home to Raffles London Hotel. The meticulous restoration of the Edwardian Baroque building required the use of reliable waterproofing materials behind the scenes. For each of the hotel’s bathrooms, a complete system of products was used, including the tileable backerboard Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD, which creates an even and load bearing substrate to tile directly onto. The accompanying sealing products KERDI-KEBA, KERDI-FIX and KERDI-COLL-L created a secure barrier against any water ingress over potential weak points such as screw penetrations and connections, and the KERDI-LINE-H 50 G2 linear drain and KERDI-SHOWER tray we used in the shower area.

3. A high-end residential project, in the peaks of Saddleworth in Manchester, saw the renovation of an old barn on a working farm where a key element of the barn’s transformation was the master bedroom which boasts an en suite bathroom accessed through a stunning walk-in wardrobe. The team stripped everything back, then installed Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO-PS under the floor, providing sound reduction and a fast warm up. Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT was also installed on the wall areas, ensuring the en suite was as welcoming as possible. For easy control, the voice activated DITRA-HEAT thermostat, DITRA-HEAT-E-R6-E-was used, and this, paired with the clients’ requirements to include surround-sound speakers and a TV at the end of the bath, introduced an efficient and interactive element into the bathroom.

4. A residential project in Longfield, Kent, saw multiple wetrooms installed and stylishly fitted with Schlüter-Systems products, creating both level-entry access and a uniform look. As well as DITRA-HEAT, the low height drainage system Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-G3 was installed to ensure simple level access for an area that would be far trickier to achieve using a standard drain. This was particularly apparent in the en suite, which was specified with a 2-way fall in the shower. The unique feature was developed with flush transitions, coming together by first screeding the shower floor and then using Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-LTS sloped shower board to create the required fall. U-shaped channel profile Schlüter-DECO-SG made the attachment of a glass screen possible without damaging the waterproofing layer beneath the tiles.

5. Each of the 5 bedrooms in this beautiful Shrophsire home benefits from a large open-plan en suite bathroom, with individual designs and colour schemes giving them all their own unique look. A total of 7 bathrooms were installed, including a swimming pool changing area. To provide simple level access in the bathrooms, Schlüter’s KERDI-LINE-G3 linear drain was used. The drain has a low height build-up of just 78mm, making it the ideal solution where there are more restrictive height requirements. The chosen channel cover for the KERDI-LINE-G3 drains were KERDI-LINE-D-G3, a frameless cover which allows for the tile to be integrated into the shower drain, making it seamless and near invisible and enhancing the aesthetic appeal. To complement the use of Schlüter’s linear drains, the preformed shower tray KERDI-SHOWER-LTS creates the necessary shower fall.

6. Tucked away in Sutton Bonington in Nottinghamshire sits a beautiful Grade II-listed home which was carefully brought back to life with a stunning renovation. Andrew Hindes Interiors was tasked with renovating 2 small rooms and turning them into one large bathroom. Starting in the shower area, the Schlüter-KERDI-TS complete set was adhered to the shower tray to create a sound waterproof connection between the tray, made of stone resin and the adjoining wall. Further products from the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing range were used, including the KERDI-200 membrane, Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL sealing adhesive, supporting the overall protection of the bathroom. For functional and aesthetic purposes, a prefabricated Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD-N niche was installed, while Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-DUO Peel & Stick was the answer when deciding what underfloor heating to use.

This statement wetroom in a residential project designed by Quell Bathrooms features an integrated linear drain wetroom kit to provide guaranteed waterproofing and drainage. The waterproofing and sealing kit contained Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing membrane, plus Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band, Schlüter-KERDI-KERECK pre-formed corner pieces and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL sealing adhesive. The rest of the room utilised Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD waterproof backerboard in a 10mm thickness, along with DITRA-HEAT underfoor heating.
