Shower and tap manufacturer Methven is calling on consumers to save water and energy by switching to a low-flow showerhead following the news that water bills in England and Wales will rise by an average of £94 over the next five years.
With research from the Energy Saving Trust indicating that showers account for 25% of total household water usage, Methven is advising consumers to start ‘enhancing their plans for a more sustainable future with a simple bathroom change that would more than pay for itself and offset any increases, without compromising experience’.
According to Methven’s calculations, by switching from a conventional showerhead with a flow rate of 15 litres per minute to one of the brand’s low-flow handsets, which operate at 5.5 litres per minute, households could achieve annual savings of 800kg of carbon, reduce bills by over £500, and lower water consumption by up to 91,000 litres.
Martin Walker, CEO at Methven UK, said: “Substantial financial benefits for consumers could be realised with the simple, cost-effective solution of upgrading a showerhead.
“There is a major focus at a high level on big ticket changes geared towards sustainability, which of course are effective in their own way, but are also relatively costly and not necessarily realistic.
“Replacing a showerhead is cost-effective, takes no time at all and with our low-flow technology, would reduce water usage at a time when bills are predicted to rise with regularity.”
