How Sheraton Interiors designed a bold yet refined contemporary family kitchen
Working with a high contrast colour palette, clean lines and statement materials, Shehryar Khan of Sheraton Interiors reveals how he created a contemporary family kitchen with a distinctly cool vibe.
Q: What type of property was it in and who was the project for?
A: This project was part of a full house renovation for a young family – a couple with 2 small children. The property was being completely reconfigured to create a large open-plan living, kitchen and dining space. The clients have a very modern interior aesthetic and wanted the kitchen to reflect that contemporary style while feeling fully integrated into the wider open-plan environment.

Q: What was the brief from the client for this project?
A: The brief was to create a modern kitchen that would act as the focal point of the open-plan space while remaining practical for busy family life. The clients were particularly drawn to a monochrome palette and wanted a design that felt clean, architectural and uncluttered. Storage, functionality and durability were also key considerations. Within this run, we integrated 2 tall pivot doors to keep the look seamless and uncluttered. Behind the door on the left is a bathroom, while the door on the right leads to a dedicated spice kitchen.

By disguising these entrances within the cabinetry, we were able to preserve the minimalist design while ensuring the home remained highly functional for everyday family life. This solution allowed the kitchen to feel calm, cohesive and architectural, while still providing access to essential secondary spaces without visually disrupting the main kitchen area
Q: How did you go about meeting the brief?
A: We approached the design by focusing on strong, simple forms and a refined monochrome material palette. The layout was carefully planned to maximise the open-plan flow with an uncluttered aesthetic. By layering contrasting materials and finishes, we were able to achieve visual interest while maintaining the minimal and modern feel the clients were looking for.
Q: What type of cabinetry did you choose?
A: We specified Doimo cabinetry – the high-quality finishes made it the ideal choice for achieving the robust modern look the clients wanted. They also offer excellent internal storage solutions, which allowed us to maximise practicality while maintaining the minimalist aesthetic.
Q: What materials did you use?
A: The design centres around a stunning angled island in xtone calacatta viola giving the kitchen a striking yet balanced appearance within the open-plan space.

Q: What were the particular challenges that you faced?
A: One of the key challenges in this project was the integration of the 2 tall pivot doors within the run of cabinetry. It was essential that they operated smoothly while remaining visually seamless within the overall design. Achieving perfect symmetry between the 2 doors was crucial to maintaining the architectural aesthetic of the kitchen. This required careful planning, and precise measurements to ensure the pivot mechanisms were positioned accurately and the alignment remained flawless.

Another challenge was the detailing of the island. The island incorporates angled elements, which meant the geometry had to be executed with absolute precision to ensure the lines were perfect. Careful design development and meticulous installation ensured the angles were perfectly aligned.
Q: Are there any design elements that you’re particularly proud of?
A: The island is a real standout feature. It’s a workspace and a social hub within the open-plan layout and has a striking visual focal point the minute you enter the room.
Q: What is the client's favourite part of the finished project?
A: The clients particularly love how the kitchen feels both stylish and practical. The open layout allows them to cook, entertain and spend time together as a family.
