Digital marketing: How AI can now become your GEO/SEO consultant
In the final article covering changes to Google search, Katrina Bell explains how to harness the power of AI to automate and power up your GEO, SEO and AEO.
It won’t be long before we start ditching the term SEO for good in favour of GEO, or in other words, generative engine optimisation. SEO you will already be familiar with – it includes your keywords, backlinks, optimised image descriptions. Important foundationally, indeed. But not enough by itself.
AEO is the act of appearing at the top of a search overview. Even if you are a brand leader, if AI doesn't mention you there, you are as good as invisible.
But GEO is about being in a position where AI recommends your brand or product by name. For example, if you were to ask ChatGPT: "What’s a quality British-made shower company?" your GEO efforts will get you into that recommendation. Every time someone does a search, the first thing that happens is the AI search performs a query fanout of sub searches looking for the most credible answer. It’s reviewing your direct marketing, as well as sources such as reviews, social media mentions, even the darker corners of the Internet like Slack or Reddit.
With GEO taking over, discoverability is the metric that should concern you, not follower count.
This seismic shift comes with a surprising cost- and time-saving silver lining, if you can take time to find the right product for your business. And there is no limit to when and how you schedule these tasks.
If you have a spare moment, try running this prompt on your favoured AI: choose a news story you want to understand more from your business viewpoint, then ask for new keywords for your marketing output on socials. Your SEO/GEO/AEO is now AI powered.
Here are 3 options you can start using right away:
1 – Anthropic claims its Claude AI SEO toolkit will all but kill the SEO agency business.
Billed as 'Your SEO team', Claude Code terminal toolkit provides 7 agents under one roof. You just have to ask it to check your website’s SEO and it will run an audit, all while it is optimising your images and framework. It’s free and will only get better the more it understands your business, producing GEO keywords and content strategies in minutes.
2 – Google has just started to roll out Business Home. Under one dashboard using Gemini AI, you access your Business Profile, Ads, Search Console, Gmail, even your calendar.
This will allow you to recognise spikes or troughs in one of the services you offer. Then you start a chat, ask what keywords are driving that traffic. Or from within Home you can ask it to recommend content, improve images, manage your business hours and respond to reviews. It’s in beta mode currently, but you can see if you already have access by going to https://support.google.com/businesshome/
3 – A hubSpot’s AEO checker is available as a free trial with 25 prompts – it will track your AI visibility and then give suggestions on how to improve your score. This checker is particularly useful if you already use any of hubSpot’s other services. It will show you how you are performing in ChatGPTk Gemini and Perplecxity then produce a plan to improve your outcomes.
